At Sethu Ayurveda Hospital, we offer a range of rejuvenating massage therapies, including Abhyanga, Swedana, Udvartana, Virechana, and Vamana. Each therapy is designed to restore balance and promote healing, tailored to meet your individual needs.

What is Abhyanga?

The traditional Ayurvedic oil massage technique known as abhyanga provides a deeply restorative experience that revitalizes the body and mind. Based on the fundamentals of Ayurveda, Abhyanga works to bring the body back into harmony and balance by nourishing its tissues, encouraging relaxation, and improving general health.

Translated from Sanskrit, abhyanga means “oil massage.” Warm herbal oils are applied therapeutically to the entire body, including the scalp and foot soles. This soothing, rhythmic massage method works deep into the tissues to nourish the skin, lubricate the joints, and release toxins that have built up.

Advantages of Abhyanga

  • Encourages Relaxation: Abhyanga’s calming strokes help to induce profound relaxation by calming the nervous system and lowering stress. It facilitates the experience of inner calm and tranquility by easing tension and anxiety-inducing feelings.
  • Nourishes the Skin: Abhyanga’s warm herbal oils provide the skin with intense moisture, enhancing its suppleness and texture. Frequent abhyanga improves skin radiance, lessens dryness, and shields it from the elements.
  • Promotes Detoxification: By activating the lymphatic system, abhyanga helps the body rid itself of waste materials and poisons. This cleansing impact aids in tissue purification, improves circulation, and increases general vigor.
  • Balances the Doshas: In accordance with Ayurveda, Abhyanga harmonizes the three doshas, Pitta, Kapha, and Vata.
  • Releases Muscle Tension: Abhyanga’s mild joint and muscle manipulation relieves weariness, stiffness, and tension in the muscles. It increases mobility, facilitates quicker recovery from physical activity or injury, and increases flexibility.

Our Experience with Abhyanga:

You may enjoy the life-changing effects of abhyanga in a calm and supportive setting at Sethu Ayurveda Speciality Hospital (SASH). Our knowledgeable therapists are educated in the age-old art of Ayurvedic massage, guaranteeing a customized and healing encounter catered to your specific requirements.

Swedana: The therapeutic practice of sweating

Swedana is the practice of subjecting the body to steam or heat. It can be carried out in a number of ways, including:

  1. Taking a steam bath
  2. Pools
  3. Warm compresses
  4. Warm baths in oil

Advantages of swedana

  1. Releasing toxins from the body (Ama)
  2.  Relieving pain and stiffness in the muscles
  3. Increasing the flow of blood
  4. Increasing immune system vigor
  5. Equilibrium dosha

Select the Swedana technique that works best for you, and take care not to overexpose yourself to the heat since this could lead to discomfort or dehydration.

Swedana and Abhyanga are both a component of Panchakarma, an extensive Ayurvedic purification procedure. Depending on the needs and preferences of the individual, they can be performed independently or combined. Always seek advice from an Ayurvedic physician before.

UDVARTANA

Ayurvedic massage therapy known as udvartana entails applying dry powder or herbal pastes to the body and then gently massaging or rubbing them in. The goals of this therapy are to encourage weight loss, enhance circulation, and detoxify the body.

Udvartana Types

  • Upa Udvartana: This technique involves applying a light, dry, and fine powder to the body, which is then gently rubbed in circular motions using materials such as sandalwood, turmeric, and other herbs.
  • Veeranakala Udvartana: This technique involves applying a stronger herbal paste to the body, mainly to places where Kapha is overdoing it. After that, the paste is massaged into the skin to encourage the body’s natural cleansing mechanism.

Advantages of Udvartana

  • Detoxification: Udvartana supports general health and wellbeing by assisting the body in getting rid of toxins (Ama).
  • Weight management: By increasing metabolism and decreasing water retention, the therapy is thought to help with weight loss.
  • Skin health: By boosting blood circulation and eliminating dead skin cells, udvartana helps enhance the texture, tone, and complexion of the skin.
  • Improved appearance of cellulite: The therapy’s mild friction can aid in the breakdown of cellulite and enhance its appearance.
  • Pain relief: By promoting blood circulation and calming the muscles, udvartana helps reduce joint pain and muscular stiffness.

Precautions and Procedures of Udvartana

Only a licensed Ayurvedic physician or therapist should provide udvartana. Prior to receiving the treatment, it is imperative that you:

  • Speak with an Ayurvedic specialist to find out which herbs and components are best for your dosha type.

  • Let the therapist know about any allergies, illnesses, or prescription drugs you take at the moment.

  • Verify that the therapist maintains appropriate hygiene standards and that the therapy space is tidy and welcoming.

  • To remove the powder or paste from the skin, taking a warm water bath is customary following Udvartana therapy. The therapy is frequently followed by a steam bath (Swedana) and heated oil massage (Abhyanga) to maximize the therapeutic effects. Before adding Udvartana to your wellness regimen, it is imperative that you speak with an Ayurvedic specialist, just like you would with other Ayurvedic treatments.

VIRECHANA

  • An Ayurvedic detoxification treatment called vivechana involves a controlled body purge that mainly targets the buildup of toxins (Ama) in the digestive system.

In order to improve general health and wellbeing, this procedure attempts to cleanse the intestines, liver, and gallbladder.

Benefits of Virechana

  • Detoxification: Virechana aids in the removal of toxins that have collected in the digestive system, hence enhancing general health and wellbeing.
  • Better digestion: By getting rid of toxins and undigested food particles, the therapy can improve digestion and improve gut health in general as well as nutritional absorption.
  • Weight management: By eliminating waste products and toxins from the body, vivechana may help with weight loss.
  • Skin and eye health: By treating toxin-related problems in the body, the therapy can enhance the complexion of the skin and the health of the eyes.
  • Chronic disease prevention and treatment: Virechana can aid in the prevention and treatment of chronic illnesses like skin problems, joint pain, and other ailments linked to the buildup of toxins in the body.

Precautions and Contraindications

Only a licensed Ayurvedic practitioner should do virechana; they will determine the individual’s unique needs and contraindications. Pregnancy, incapacitated states, extreme frailty, and specific medical disorders are some of the instances when Virechana should not be used. It is imperative that you disclose to the Ayurvedic specialist any allergies, illnesses, or prescription drugs you are currently using.

VAMANA

An Ayurvedic treatment called vamana includes controlled vomiting in order to rid the body of excess Kapha, which is a mixture of earth and water elements. The main ailments this method is used to treat are respiratory, skin, and digestive illnesses that are associated with elevated Kapha.

Benefits of Vamana

  • Balancing Kapha: By helping the body get rid of extra Kapha, Vamana improves general health and wellbeing.
  • Respiratory health: By lowering Kapha buildup in the respiratory tract, the therapy can help with respiratory conditions like allergies, bronchitis, and asthma.
  • Skin and digestive health: Vamana can help with psoriasis, eczema, and other skin ailments. It can also help with digestive problems like bloating, constipation, and indigestion.
  • Chronic disease prevention and treatment: Vamana is useful in the management of chronic disorders including obesity, diabetes, and arthritis that are linked to elevated Kapha.

Precautions and Contraindications

Only a licensed Ayurvedic practitioner should provide vamana; they will determine the individual’s unique requirements and contraindications. Pregnancy, incapacitated states, extreme frailty, and specific medical disorders are some of the instances when Vamana should not be used. It is essential to inform the Ayurvedic expert about any allergies, medical conditions, or medications you are currently using.

The therapist will start pouring the warm oil or liquid in a gentle and rhythmic flow onto the center of your forehead, just above the eyebrows. The liquid will trickle down your scalp and hair, creating a soothing sensation. The pouring is usually done in a slow and consistent manner for a specified duration, typically ranging from 30 minutes to an hour.

During the treatment, you are encouraged to relax and let go of any tension or stress. Many people find the sound and sensation of the liquid pouring to be deeply calming, inducing a meditative state and promoting mental clarity.

After the pouring is complete, you may be given a few minutes to rest and allow the therapeutic effects to settle. Some therapists may also offer a gentle head or scalp massage to further enhance the relaxation.

The specific oils or liquids used, as well as the duration of the treatment, may vary based on individual needs and the expertise of the practitioner.
